Pure Cremations: Everything You Need to Know

Pure cremation—also known as direct cremation—is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a simple, dignified, and fuss-free alternative to a traditional funeral. At F.P. Gaunt & Sons, we’re here to help you understand exactly what a pure cremation involves, how it works, and whether it’s the right choice for you or your loved one.

What is a Pure Cremation?

A pure cremation (also known as a direct cremation) is a straightforward cremation without a funeral service, procession, or mourners present. It separates the practical aspects of a cremation from the ceremonial, allowing family and friends to hold a separate memorial or celebration of life at a time and place that suits them.

This option is ideal for those who prefer simplicity, affordability, or a more personal and informal way to say goodbye.

How Much Does a Pure Cremation Cost?

Pure cremations are typically significantly less expensive than traditional funerals or other ceremonial costs.

At F.P. Gaunt & Sons, our direct cremation package starts from £1,800 and includes:

  • Rowley Oak Effect Coffin
  • A Pilato Mercedes Hearse to convey the coffin to the Crematorium with a Funeral Director and pallbearers
  • Transferring your loved one into our care during office hours (within 10 miles)
  • An appointment for viewing your loved one in our private Chapel of Rest
  • Our Professional Service Charge
  • Crematorium fee (Waseley Hills Crematorium)
  • Up to 6 free Bereavement support sessions if required

We believe in transparency, so you’ll never face hidden costs. Please get in touch for a detailed breakdown or tailored quote.

Can You Attend a Direct Cremation?

In most cases, no mourners attend a pure cremation. The cremation takes place at a time arranged by the funeral director, usually early in the day with no ceremony.

However, some families choose to:

  • Host a separate memorial or celebration of life later on
  • Arrange for a private scattering of ashes
  • Hold a virtual gathering or tribute online

If you’d prefer a simple attended cremation, we offer options that allow a small number of close family or friends to be present.

FAQs

  • Is pure cremation right for everyone?

Not always. While it suits many people who want simplicity or cost savings, those looking for a formal farewell might prefer a traditional service.

  • Do I get the ashes after a pure cremation?

Yes – you can choose to collect the ashes, have them scattered at the crematorium, or have them returned to you.

  • Where does the cremation take place?

We use trusted, local crematoria that uphold the highest standards of care and respect.

  • Can we still hold a ceremony?

Absolutely. Many families choose to organise a personal memorial later – at home, in nature, or at a favourite location.

  • Is it possible to plan in advance?

Yes. We offer affordable pre-paid pure cremation plans so your wishes are known and costs are covered.
